In addition to the educational qualities of the center, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center features a one-of-a-kind family garden, miles of wildflower-laden trails for bird watching, and multitude of stunning regional architecture.
The quirky southwestern area of Austin is also home to one of the region's most iconic restaurants. The Salt Lick BBQ was first opened in 1967 by Thurman Roberts, Sr and his wife, Hisako T. Roberts. Roberts and his wife built the Salt Lick restaurant on the ranch where he was raised, using locally quarried limestone. The sweet barbecue sauce, popularized by the menu, was inspired by Hisako's Hawaiian heritage. Today, the restaurant is still run by the Roberts family and has garnered a reputation of having the best barbecue in Austin.
The restaurant has gained national recognition and has been featured on a number of food-centered shows such as the Travel Channel's show Man v. Food and The Best Sandwich in America. The restaurant was also favorably reviewed by Food Network chefs Bobby Flay and Duff Goldman.
