Round Rock and nearby Pflugerville are two growing communities just a quick ride up Interstate 35 from downtown Austin. A host of master-planned communities attend to the diverse needs of residents. Dedicated golfers have many golf course communities to choose from, and outdoor enthusiasts will find ample hiking and biking trails, pools tennis courts and other amenities.

Overview of Round Rock and Pflugerville

Round Rock, located 20 miles north of downtown Austin, is a vibrant, dynamic city that's growing faster than most municipalities in the state. In 2008, Money magazine ranked it seventh on its list of best small cities in which to live. Dell Computer is headquartered in Round Rock, just east of Interstate 35. Cypress Semiconductor, TD Industries and Farmers Insurance each maintain a major presence in the city. Round Rock Premium Outlets features more than 120 stores, including Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, J. Crew and Ann Taylor. Many businesses and professional offices are located along Great Oaks Drive as well.

Pflugerville is about 15 miles northwest of downtown Austin. There are numerous Pflugerville neighborhoods to choose from, including Falcon Pointe, the Villages of Hidden Lake and Blackhawk. The highly-rated Pflugerville ISD includes 18 elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools

Round Rock: Things to Do

Round Rock Express - The AAA minor league baseball team plays its home games at Dell Diamond. This Pacific Coast League team is affiliated with the Texas Rangers. It was founded by Reid Ryan, son of Hall-of-Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan. The inspiration for the team name, Rock Rock Express, comes from the pitcher's nickname, the Ryan Express.

Old Settlers Park - This 645-acre park in Round Rock is described by the city as "crown jewel of the park system." The facility offers everything from cricket to disc golf. Residents also benefit from seven playgrounds, seven soccer fields, 20 baseball fields and two lighted football fields. Twelve lighted tennis courts and two sand volleyball courts. Hikers and bikers enjoy 3.3 miles of paved trails.

Bright Lake at Old Settlers Park features a fishing pier from which anglers can catch bass, perch and catfish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Hatchery periodically re-stocks the lake to maintain the fishing action.

Round Rock Neighborhoods

Popular Round Rock neighborhoods include Mayfield Ranch, Behrens Ranch, Forest Creek, Terravista and Paloma Lake.

Behrens Ranch - This is a 500-acre master-planned community just minutes from great shopping and dining options. Homes range in size from about 2,000 to 5,000 sq-ft. Mature oak trees are scattered across rolling terrain. There's an Olympic-sized pool behind the Amenity Center. A tennis court, playground, walking trails and a covered pavilion are among the amenities that residents of Behrens Ranch enjoy.

Forest Creek - This is a golf course community featuring finely-built residences. Forest Creek Golf Club in was selected as the "Best Public Golf Course in Central Texas" by Golf Digest. The par-72, 7,147-yard layout features beautifully manicured fairways flanked by mature trees and contoured bunkers.

Terravista - This is another master-planned golf course community. The championship golf course at Terra Vista is known for its immaculate greens and terrific views. The rolling, 7,200-yard layout offers five sets of tees for players of every skill level. Water tumbles from one water hazard to another at a course that is both challenging and aesthetically pleasing.

Paloma Lake - The development is served by the Round Rock ISD, including Stony Point High School, an International Baccalaureate school. Paloma Lake residents can relax poolside or try their hand at a little bass fishing on the private lake.

Pflugerville: Things to Do

This active community hosts a number of well-attended events throughout the year, including the Lake Pflugerville Triathlon, the Pfall Pfest Arts and Crafts Show, Music in the Park and Deutschen Pfest. The big July 4th celebration is dubbed the Pflugerville Pfirecracker Pfestival.

Lake Pflugerville - There's much to do in and around Lake Pflugerville, a 180-acre reservoir that features seven fishing piers and a non-motorized boat launch. Enjoy an invigorating hike on the 3.4-mile crushed gravel trail routed around the perimeter of the lake, or rent a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddle board for a glorious day out on the water. The beach area is popular for swimming, sand sports and sunbathing.

Hawaiian Falls Waterpark - This Pflugerville attraction features numerous water slides, a huge wave pool and a lazy river. Many visitors consider Diamond Head Drop, a double-tube ride, a highlight of the experience. There are also activities that don't involve the water, like zip lining and the ropes course.

Pflugerville Neighborhoods

Pflugerville also offers a variety of planned communities, including some with golf courses. Here are some details about just a few of the more popular Pflugerville neighborhoods.

Falcon Pointe - This planned community is just minutes from Texas Toll Road 45. Public schools, grades K-12, are within walking distance of the development. The resort-style community center features an outdoor pool. Residents also embrace the outdoors hiking and biking on 11 miles of trails, playing the 18-hole disc golf course and fishing for bass at the pond. Sports enthusiasts enjoy the 24-hour fitness center, basketball courts, tennis courts and volleyball courts.

Villages of Hidden Lake - This is a master-planned community with room for over 1,300 homes on spacious lots. The development is conveniently located just north of Lake Pflugerville and east of Toll Road 45/130. Amenities include a pool with a kid's play area, basketball court and playground. The newer Stone Hill Town Center is nearby.

Blackhawk - This planned development includes home prices from the low $200s and up. Avid golfers enjoy playing at Blackhawk Golf Club, an 18-hole links-style layout measuring over 7,200 yards from the back tees. Blackhawk GC has hosted a number of Texas professional golf tournaments. Errant shots are intercepted by 46 sand bunkers, mature trees and a number of water hazards.
