More About the Lake
Residents and visitors alike revel in endless recreational opportunities, including boating, sailing, jet skiing and scuba diving. Fishing enthusiasts vie for trophy largemouth bass and other popular game fish. A one-time world record Guadalupe bass came out of the reservoir. Many other activities are available to area residents, including experiences as wide-ranging as zip lining and winery tours.
Many residents with children consider the academic and athletic performance of the area's schools a real plus. For example, Lake Travis High School, with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students, is a 5A school. From 2007-2011, the football team won five consecutive state championships. Volleyball, golf and rugby teams have also won state championships. About half of the students take Advanced Placement courses, and the school ranks 88th out of 1,869 Texas high schools, according to U.S. News and World Report.
World Class Golf Courses
You'll find some of the best in Hill Country golf in the area. Many neighborhoods offer beautiful homes situated right along the fairways. Here are some prominent master-planned communities to consider:
Hills of Lakeway - This community offers golf and much more. The four clubhouses at The Hills combine to offer exquisite dining, a 7,000 sq-ft fitness center, swimming and a spa. The Hills Country Club and Lakeway Country Club offer some of the finest golf in the greater Austin area. In 2012, the Dallas Morning News named the complex to its "Top 100 Courses in Texas" list.
The Academy of Golf Dynamics at The Hills was designed by Jack Nicklaus, known by his avid followers as the "Golden Bear." This first-of-its-kind facility is completely focused on helping participants play better golf. Attendees enjoy state-of-the-art golf instruction.
Avid golfers love the varied challenges at the two 18-hole layouts at Lakeway Country Club: Live Oak and Yaupon. Live Oak is a challenging 6,847-yard, par-72 layout where you'll deal with occasional blind tee shots, rolling terrain and tree-lined fairways. The par-three third hole is commonly referred to as "Jaws," because shots must clear a deep ravine to reach the green. Yaupon is a par-72 layout that stretches to 6,814 yards in length. The final hole is a roller-coaster of a par-five. The 503-yard test drops 50 feet down to a pond before rising 40 feet to a dramatic and tricky green.
Flintrock Falls - This gated community features not one, but two golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and his team. In fact, it is the only community in the state with side-by-side Nicklaus courses. Many fairways are majestically framed by large trees, and contoured bunkers demand accuracy, shot after shot. Every homeowner enjoys a social membership in the club. Flintrock Falls is served by the highly ranked Lake Travis ISD. Residents live within 10 minutes of Hill Country Galleria and the Lakeway Regional Medical Center.
Falconhead Golf Club - This golf course community is conveniently located between Lake Travis and Hill Country Galleria. It is only one-half mile from the Lakeway Regional Medical Center. The course just opened in 2003. The par-72 layout plays as as long as 7,181-yards. Mature, gnarled trees, ample bunkers and undulating greens provide golfers with a truly challenging test of their skills.
Rough Hollow - This is another Lakeway community that addresses the desires of water lovers and golfers alike. Here, many homeowners enjoy dramatic hilltop views of the lake. The 1,800-acre development is uniquely situated atop limestone cliffs along three miles of shoreline. Hikers and bikers can pursue their fitness goals on over 20 miles of trails.
Steiner Ranch - This is 4,600-acre, master planned golf course community in the Lakeway area is home to the prestigious University of Texas Golf Club. The community is served by the highly rated schools in the Leander ISD. The conveniently located community is about 19 miles from downtown Austin and about 28 miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The needs of tennis enthusiasts are also addressed across the Lakeway area. At the World of Tennis Sports Complex, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and other top players have competed at stadium court. Twelve of the 16 outdoors courts are lighted, and there are two climate-controlled indoor courts. Lake Travis High School has eight lighted courts, and the Austin Tennis Academy has 12.

The neighborhoods at the southern end of the lake are certainly an attractive option for those planning to relocate to Austin. Commuters have a reasonable trip to downtown Austin and to corporate office parks and commerce centers throughout the metro area.
